Through Ruff Times

Pet Intake Program

Through Ruff Times works to reduce barriers for people who experience poverty, homelessness, mental health and substance use challenges. It was founded by, Mella Brown, a harm reduction counsellor, instructor at George Brown College’s AWCCA program, and big-time dog lover; and, Melissa Pisante, a counsellor with 10 years of experience in the social justice field.

As community workers in Toronto for over 25 years, they know there is a need for a service that will look after pets while their owner attends short and/or long term support services.

Through Ruff Times offers pet care options so that people do not need to make a choice between accessing supports or losing their animal companions.

This is needed because:

i) A person may stay in a violent situation because they do not want to leave their beloved pet with the abuser.

ii) People opt out of going to hospitals or treatment centres because there is no one in their life who can care for their pet and there are no affordable or free boarding options.

iii) The grief of losing one’s pet is devastating for both human and animal. This is a traumatic event that can hinder one’s emotional, mental and physical well-being and remain a constant source of pain throughout their life.

More Details: Through Ruff Times

Through Ruff Times works to reduce barriers for people who experience poverty, homelessness, mental health, substance use challenges, violent living conditions, and/or any other hurdles. The founders have been community workers in Toronto with over 25 years of experience, so they know that there is a need for a service that will look after pets while their owner attends short and/or long term support services.

For people who experience challenges in their daily life, whether it be homelessness/unstable housing, unsafe living conditions, mental health/substance use concerns or low income, finding a service that supports their relationship with their pet is almost non-existent. By co-creating a community that ensures safe, friendly and judgment-free exchanges, their intention is to honour the specific and changing needs of everyone involved.

Through Ruff Times aims to work from harm reduction, trauma informed and anti-oppressive principals. By co-creating a community that ensures safe, friendly and judgment-free exchanges, their intention is to honour the specific and changing needs of everyone involved.

The Gift of Imagination

We share the imaginary world of Sesame Street, talking trains and superhero pups with kids before they have a good grasp of the real world. We do this because books cultivate imagination and help expand our view of the world. All kids should get the chance to fly with a pixie or cast spells with a young wizard.

Keeping Mom and Baby Connected

Amy is a new mom to a six-month-old baby. Life can be hard as a new mom, but it’s even harder if you’re 17 years old, living in shared housing and raising a child alone while trying to finish high school. Amy is working hard to become the kind of mom she wants to be, and with the help of the team at the Parkdale Parents Primary Prevention Program, she’s on the right path.

The Cold Is Coming

When it’s 20 degrees below zero and skins cells are exposed, that skin and the rest of my body feels damn cold. I’m likely not alone in feeling this, which makes me think a lot about homeless people in our community as I dust off my winter best.
The temperature is due to drop into the low single digits within the next few weeks. Making it just the right time for Troop to help out the members of Sistering, a multi-service charity, supporting socially isolated women in Toronto who are homeless or precariously housed.

Troop Started a Year Ago – Is it Working?

It was a year ago this month that I started Troop. The idea was simple. I believed that if more neighbours knew about the needs in their area then they would be more willing to help. I believed (and still do!) that more people want to help

Is COVID-19 Actually A Good Thing?

COVID-19? A good thing? No. Hell no. But damn there is a seriously bright silver lining here and I hope I’m not the only one squinting. Devastation caused by the coronavirus has reached all corners of the world, but so has a level of compassion that we haven’t seen in decades, if ever.

Laughter is The Best Form of Therapy

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.
