A Laptop to Master English

Turning a lockdown into study time

Disruption is the name of the game these days and we’re all being forced to adapt to stay safe and sane!  You know what really helps when you’re trying to adapt in Canada?  Being able to speak English.

Many newcomers to Canada enrolled in ESL classes (English as a Second Language), are unable to continue their studies.  Although classes have moved online, they just don’t have the electronics to make distance learning work.

Jose arrived in Canada from Mexico days before the COVID-19 lockdown.  Matthew House, a registered charity supporting refugees in our community, helped Jose register for the English lessons.   Now, he has time on his hands and he wants to learn English, but he’s unable to study as much as he would like without a computer.

How you can help

Troop is working with our friends at Reboot Canada to provide refurbished electronics to students leaning English.  We’re pooling funds to purchase a used laptop for Jose.  There’s no better time than a lockdown to master English.

Troop Started a Year Ago – Is it Working?

It was a year ago this month that I started Troop. The idea was simple. I believed that if more neighbours knew about the needs in their area then they would be more willing to help. I believed (and still do!) that more people want to help

Is COVID-19 Actually A Good Thing?

COVID-19? A good thing? No. Hell no. But damn there is a seriously bright silver lining here and I hope I’m not the only one squinting. Devastation caused by the coronavirus has reached all corners of the world, but so has a level of compassion that we haven’t seen in decades, if ever.

Laughter is The Best Form of Therapy

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.
