A Mattress For A Good Night's Sleep

Room For A Child

Actually, it's about so much more than just the sleep

There’s nothing quite like a peaceful bedroom.  Life is stressful and we all need our space to unwind, rest and recharge.  Even little people.

In fact, the little ones benefit greatly from a peaceful bedroom environment.  Dawn Gillespie has seen it time and time again through her work with Room-for-a-Child, her non-profit that offers bedroom makeovers to families in need.   She’s seen first hand the impact on kids who finally get to experience the comfort of a bed that’s off the ground and the right size, a dresser for clothes instead of boxes, and a small desk for school work versus no work space at all.  These children are well rested and able to focus more at school.  She’s even seen a decline in behavioural issues from the kids she’s worked with.

How you can help

Dawn has a growing waitlist of families who need her services.  What she’s always in need of is new single mattress and boxspring sets.  She doesn’t want to sleep on an old used mattress so she doesn’t think the kids she’s helping should have to either.  You can help Dawn with her next bedroom makeover, and offer more than just a good night’s sleep, by pooling funds to purchase a discounted mattress set from her supplier.

More Details: Room For A Child

When Dawn retired as a principal from the Toronto District School Board she quickly realized how much she missed the school community, the kids most of all. Initially, Room-For-A-Child was an interesting hobby, a way for Dawn to mesh her love of children with her desire to create positive learning environments. But as the word spread, Dawn’s idea became a Not-For-Profit organization supported by 40+ volunteers.

Over the past 6 years, Dawn has redesigned the bedrooms of over 100 children in Toronto, York and Durham areas. She finds the families in need through a network of principals, school social workers and settlement workers. She finds joy in knowing that the children she helps are sleeping better because success in school is linked to a good night’s rest.

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.

Don’t Let Age Hold You Back

J Lo says, “just because I turned 50, it’s not over, we’re just at half-time right now.” Amen. This week, we featured Wozenat, a woman courageously jumping into the second half of her life. As a refugee from Eritrea, she arrived alone in Canada two months ago to embark on a new journey.

It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over
