A Skateboard for Summer Camp

Romero House

Calling local skaters!

If you’re droppin’ the airwalks and rockin’ the boardslides, there’s a good chance you’re just the person to fulfill this need.  If you think airwalks and boardslides are trendy shoes (umm, you might actually be right?) but that’s not what we mean here.  We’re talking skateboards and we need one for a 12-year-old boy from Colombia.  He arrived in Canada a year ago with his parents and are former residents of Romero House.

This summer he’s participating in a online camp that’s all about creating brave spaces to engage, educate, & empower men and boys on gender & equality.  They cover a lot of topics and use various methods to teach, one being skateboarding.  Issue is, he doesn’t have a skateboard.

How you can help

We’re looking for a used skateboard so his little man can take full advantage of this summer camp.  So dust off that deck and complete the form below to share your wheels with a neighbour.

This need has been fulfilled!

To all you non-skaters, translation provided (yes, we totally Googled this):

Airwalk – a trick done with or without grabbing the nose; once in the air the front foot is kicked out and the back foot is kicked back so the skateboarder is in a walking type position.

Boardslide – A slide in which the nose is brought up over the obstacle and the board slides between the two trucks.

Deck – The wooden part of the skateboard assembly, made usually of hard maple.

More Details: Romero House

Romero House welcomes refugee claimants with open arms. They offer housing and support services to people who claim refugee status after arriving in Canada. Refugees are welcome to stay in one of their 10 apartments without internal locks, to live as neighbours rather than simply clients. They help the refugees establish themselves in Canada and create community together.

All are welcome in their community regardless of religion, ethnicity, political beliefs, sexual orientation or gender identity. Over the past 25 years, they have built an organization that celebrates difference and offers the support that refugees need.

Troop Started a Year Ago – Is it Working?

It was a year ago this month that I started Troop. The idea was simple. I believed that if more neighbours knew about the needs in their area then they would be more willing to help. I believed (and still do!) that more people want to help

Is COVID-19 Actually A Good Thing?

COVID-19? A good thing? No. Hell no. But damn there is a seriously bright silver lining here and I hope I’m not the only one squinting. Devastation caused by the coronavirus has reached all corners of the world, but so has a level of compassion that we haven’t seen in decades, if ever.

Laughter is The Best Form of Therapy

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.
