Backpacks for Kids

Romero House

Back At It

Rewind to when the Oprah Show was still a thing –  can you recall arguably one of the most iconic surprises in the history of the show? It’s the episode where she gave everyone in the audience a brand new Pontiac G6 while screaming, “You get a car! You get a car! Everyone gets a CAR!” We want to recreate that moment, but instead of Oprah, its Troopers, instead of cars, its backpacks, and instead of audience members, its kids! Sounds thrilling, right?

We don’t want to give just one backpack away; we want to give 11! At the Romeo House, there’s a variety pack of totally awesome and wildly talented refugee kids ranging from ages 3-18 who need help getting a kickstart to their school year.

There’s 6 families in total with kids getting ready for school : a 12-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy from Mexico; a 7-year-old girl and 14-year-old-boy from the Middle East; a 12-year-old boy from Colombia; a 12-year-old-boy and 18-year-old girl from Iran; 9 and 12-year-old girls from Mexico; and, a another Middle Eastern family with daughters aged 4 and 6.  For six of the kids, this will be there first time attending school in Canada!

How you can help

We’re pooling funds to purchase 11 backpacks. We’ve got a wish list from each of the kids so we can make like Oprah and give these kids a special gift to start their school year off with a bang.

More Details: Romero House

Romero House welcomes refugee claimants with open arms. They offer housing and support services to people who claim refugee status after arriving in Canada. Refugees are welcome to stay in one of their 10 apartments without internal locks, to live as neighbours rather than simply clients. They help the refugees establish themselves in Canada and create community together.

All are welcome in their community regardless of religion, ethnicity, political beliefs, sexual orientation or gender identity. Over the past 25 years, they have built an organization that celebrates difference and offers the support that refugees need.

Troop Started a Year Ago – Is it Working?

It was a year ago this month that I started Troop. The idea was simple. I believed that if more neighbours knew about the needs in their area then they would be more willing to help. I believed (and still do!) that more people want to help

Is COVID-19 Actually A Good Thing?

COVID-19? A good thing? No. Hell no. But damn there is a seriously bright silver lining here and I hope I’m not the only one squinting. Devastation caused by the coronavirus has reached all corners of the world, but so has a level of compassion that we haven’t seen in decades, if ever.

Laughter is The Best Form of Therapy

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.
