We share the imaginary world of Sesame Street, talking trains and superhero pups with kids before they have a good grasp of the real world. We do this because books cultivate imagination and help expand our view of the world. All kids should get the chance to fly with a pixie or cast spells with a young wizard.
Let’s spread some Christmas cheer to a teen in need
As the holiday season approaches, do you start feeling that rush of merry childhood memories? You know what we mean – those joyful, giddy feelings you get when you hear your favourite holiday song or see the twinkly lights start to turn on in your neighbourhood. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, you can probably remember another special holiday that you always looked forward to as a kid.
This holiday season, we want to spread that child-like holiday cheer to a 17-year-old youth who could really use some Christmas magic.
Diego (that’s not his real name, but it’s the name he wanted us to share with you) will be spending his second Christmas living at a group home – before that he lived in shelters. We met Diego through Arrabon House, a registered charity in Toronto helping young women, including youth who are transitioning, ages 13-24, who are survivors of abuse, trauma, and mental health challenges.
Since moving into Arrabon House, Diego has been thriving – staff say that he’s a talented artist with a big sense of humour (and he loves to play pranks). But the road to recovery isn’t always a straight line, and for the past two years Diego has also struggled with mental health challenges, making it difficult to attend school.
How you can help
In his former life, Diego didn’t have the means or the support system to celebrate the holiday season. This year, we’re going to change that: We’re asking Troop members to help us make this a Christmas Diego will always remember by fulfilling his holiday wishes.
Diego’s just like Santa – he made his list and checked it twice. Pool funds for his wish list or purchase one of his dream gifts this year and all items will be shipped to the Troop head office to be wrapped and delivered to Arrabon House in time for Christmas.
