Enough with the Heat!

Fire and tent

Help our homeless friends cool down

Strange things start happening after we hit this many days in a row of extreme heat with temperatures above 30 degrees.  Grown adults lounge in kiddie pools, the cold tap becomes the hot tap and the hot tap becomes the burn-your-hands-off tap, and ankles develop sweat glands.  Craziness.

No doubt our homeless neighbours are feeling the burn from this heat more than others.  We all know how hot a tent can get on a normal summer day!

How you can help

The team at Greater Together is distributing ‘cool-down’ kits to our homeless neighbours living on the streets or in the tent communities in downtown Toronto.  We’re pooling funds to pull together 100 kits complete with personal hygiene products, water and some cool snacks.  We’ve received extra stuff to add to our packs from loads of amazing places.  How refreshing!

More Details: GreaterTogether

GreaterTogether is a nonprofit started by two Toronto area social workers and the co-founder of the Red Dot Project. They are a grass-roots agency delivering basic needs to the most vulnerable members of our community. Through a harm-reduction and anti-oppression approach, they focus on supporting our homeless neighbours. Through peer-to-peer out reach, they go where the homeless are – to the streets of Toronto.

In addition to providing basic necessities to the community they serve, they also provide education about available support services.

Troop Started a Year Ago – Is it Working?

It was a year ago this month that I started Troop. The idea was simple. I believed that if more neighbours knew about the needs in their area then they would be more willing to help. I believed (and still do!) that more people want to help

Is COVID-19 Actually A Good Thing?

COVID-19? A good thing? No. Hell no. But damn there is a seriously bright silver lining here and I hope I’m not the only one squinting. Devastation caused by the coronavirus has reached all corners of the world, but so has a level of compassion that we haven’t seen in decades, if ever.

Laughter is The Best Form of Therapy

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.
