Groceries for Neighbours

Windermere United Church

Bring on the comeback of neighbours helping neighbours.

If we need to pick one theme for 2020, let’s not make it the virus.  Instead, lets remember the start of this decade as the come back of neighbours.  Neighbours helping neighbours is this pandemic’s silver lining and it deserves to be remembered.

Thanks to the Neighbours Helping Neighbours initiative driven by Windermere United Church, residents of the West-End are stepping up for each other.  Through a network of community leaders and neighbourhood pods (hyperlocal text message groups or phone trees organized by street or building) caring neighbours can quickly find and help those who are in need.

One way this initiative is supporting residents is by providing grocery store gift cards to families facing financial hardship due to COVID-19.

How you can help

Troop is pooling funds to purchase 10 x $50 grocery store gift cards for these families.  So, if doing good is your thing, heck, even if it’s not, here’s your chance to make it a come back and help a neighbour.

Troop Started a Year Ago – Is it Working?

It was a year ago this month that I started Troop. The idea was simple. I believed that if more neighbours knew about the needs in their area then they would be more willing to help. I believed (and still do!) that more people want to help

Is COVID-19 Actually A Good Thing?

COVID-19? A good thing? No. Hell no. But damn there is a seriously bright silver lining here and I hope I’m not the only one squinting. Devastation caused by the coronavirus has reached all corners of the world, but so has a level of compassion that we haven’t seen in decades, if ever.

Laughter is The Best Form of Therapy

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.
