Keep it Cool

The power of hydration

Whether you relay on an AC unit, your neighbour’s sprinkler, or you just munch on ice cubes, we all need an effective way to cool down when it’s hot.  After hitting a few 30+ degree temps in the city already this summer, the team at GreaterTogether are taking action to help Toronto’s homeless community keep cool.

Covid-19 has had a huge impact on shelters in Toronto.  Some have closed their doors due to outbreaks, while others have had to reduce capacity to adhere to social distancing rules, hence the tents popping up in the city.

As the temperatures raise, GreaterTogether is hitting the streets to deliver water bottles to those who find themselves homeless during the pandemic.

How you can help

We’re pooling funds to purchase 72 water bottles to deliver hydration to homeless men, women and children in Toronto.  We’re ordering from a bulk supplier at $2.50/bottle.  Now that’s cool!

More Details: GreaterTogether

GreaterTogether is a nonprofit started by two Toronto area social workers and the co-founder of the Red Dot Project. They are a grass-roots agency delivering basic needs to the most vulnerable members of our community. Through a harm-reduction and anti-oppression approach, they focus on supporting our homeless neighbours. Through peer-to-peer out reach, they go where the homeless are – to the streets of Toronto.

In addition to providing basic necessities to the community they serve, they also provide education about available support services.

Troop Started a Year Ago – Is it Working?

It was a year ago this month that I started Troop. The idea was simple. I believed that if more neighbours knew about the needs in their area then they would be more willing to help. I believed (and still do!) that more people want to help

Is COVID-19 Actually A Good Thing?

COVID-19? A good thing? No. Hell no. But damn there is a seriously bright silver lining here and I hope I’m not the only one squinting. Devastation caused by the coronavirus has reached all corners of the world, but so has a level of compassion that we haven’t seen in decades, if ever.

Laughter is The Best Form of Therapy

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.
