The Problem With Sunshine

Bring the heat, not the burn

Every year, Canadians wait eight months for winter to melt away into a soggy spring that typically lasts a few weeks only to be overtaken by scorching summer temperatures with high humidity.  Enter autumn for a month or so, and then start all over again.  That’s weather in Canada, eh!

It’s during this short and humid summer period when we’re reminded that the rays we crave so much during winter hibernation are incredibly harmful and we need to lather ourselves with expensive cream to even enjoy our short window of vitamin D induced light.

How you can help

Our friends at Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre need sunscreen for the homeless members of their community.  We’re pooling funds to ensure everyone gets to enjoy some rays without the burns.

More Details: Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre

The Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre (CONC) is a multi-service agency in West Downtown Toronto. They provide essential services to vulnerable community members including children, youth, adults and seniors living in poverty. Their services are offered to those lacking food and income security, homeless, underhoused, and experiencing other barriers to living healthy lives and participating fully in the community.

They operate a 68 bed men’s shelter at 973 Lansdowne Avenue, a 30 bed men’s shelter at 850/854 Bloor Street West, and 20 units of transitional housing. The housing team at CONC is committed to decreasing on-going shelter use by facilitating comprehensive support and community follow up support. They also help clients to increase their income, social inclusion and supportive community linkages, contributing to housing stability. Eighty-five percent (85%) of their clients residing in permanent supportive housing have retained their housing for 1 year or more.

Troop Started a Year Ago – Is it Working?

It was a year ago this month that I started Troop. The idea was simple. I believed that if more neighbours knew about the needs in their area then they would be more willing to help. I believed (and still do!) that more people want to help

Is COVID-19 Actually A Good Thing?

COVID-19? A good thing? No. Hell no. But damn there is a seriously bright silver lining here and I hope I’m not the only one squinting. Devastation caused by the coronavirus has reached all corners of the world, but so has a level of compassion that we haven’t seen in decades, if ever.

Laughter is The Best Form of Therapy

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.
