Unbearably Hot

Michael House

AC unit for a mother and baby

We all know that Ontario has been sweating through one of the hottest stretches of summer. We’ve been told by climatologists to get used to it and to expect hot summer reruns again and again. Just when you think we’re in the clear…WHAM it’s sauna time! So crank your A/C and relish in the thought of being cool, Vanilla Ice cool – “Ice ice, baby.”

This is where we need to “stop, collaborate and listen…” because Denyse, a refugee mother from Rwanda, has been staying in transitional housing with her baby daughter Olivia and the heat inside is extreme. The old apartment feels hotter inside than outside! It’s so hot that Olivia is frequently sick. Denyse has searched tirelessly for an A/C unit that will provide relief on a budget, but due to the window dimensions, a cheaper window-mounted A/C unit won’t work.

How you can help

Neighbours can pool funds to help purchase an A/C unit so Denyse and baby Olivia can stay as cool as ice.  (and as sweet as pie!)

Troop Started a Year Ago – Is it Working?

It was a year ago this month that I started Troop. The idea was simple. I believed that if more neighbours knew about the needs in their area then they would be more willing to help. I believed (and still do!) that more people want to help

Is COVID-19 Actually A Good Thing?

COVID-19? A good thing? No. Hell no. But damn there is a seriously bright silver lining here and I hope I’m not the only one squinting. Devastation caused by the coronavirus has reached all corners of the world, but so has a level of compassion that we haven’t seen in decades, if ever.

Laughter is The Best Form of Therapy

During these trying times, we offer some light-hearted relief by sharing some of the most comical memes, videos and tweets that have popped up over the past few weeks. In the words of Mark Twain, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” Enjoy.
